La Marisol - a Spanish name for a French holiday home in Provence?

General meaning of the name Marisol:

Linguistic roots of the name Marisol:

Aramaic: mirjam = the bitterness

Egyptian: mry = the beloved

Hebrew: rym = to give (gift of God)

Hebrew: myr = fertile

Spanish: sol = the sun; soledad = the solitude

But why does someone call his Provençal holiday home La Marisol?

There is a nice story to tell: The house was named La Marisol by a former owner in the 2000s. Even then, La Marsiol was used for holiday rentals. The owner at the time was a Frenchwoman called Marie-Jose. Marie is a very popular name in France. Probably because of her always happy, laughing character, her nickname was “sunny”. So what could be more natural than to name the house “Mari-sol", a combination of both.

The owner, who bought the house in 2009, was called Rachel and originally came from the UK. She kept the name of the house because she also had a personal connection to the name. Mary was the name of her late mother. An inheritance had enabled her to realize her dream of a house in Provence. Even today, the Welsh dresser in the entrance area is a reminder of this Mary. It is one of her prized possessions that was allowed to remain in La Marisol.

We have come to know La Marisol as a beautiful, sunny, friendly place and are delighted with the associations of the name. Anyone sitting on the sunny roof terrace or in the warm and peaceful courtyard will realize: the name is perfect - there is no reason to change it.

We want to preserve and continue the history of this beautiful place.
